I think they are often film-school projects that then somehow get distribution, which explains their amateurish production values. I don't know the names of them off-hand, though the movies themselves are often kinda bad: low-quality camerawork, wooden acting, terrible sound, super-stereotypical characters, bland plots, attractive, but boring actors. You might try some of the indie B-movie, and C-movie grade gay films made and distributed by small US producers like LOGO and PictureThis!
